Superintendent Austin Beutner gave an update on Monday, August 3, about what the start of school will look like in a few weeks.

LAUSD published transcripts of the speech in English and Spanish.

A few highlights:

  • LAUSD has now provided more than 50 million meals and will continue to provide them until students can return to schools
  • Entercom is hosting a fundraiser throughout the month of August to raise money for meals. $20 buys a week of lunches. Text NEED to 76278 or visit lausd.net for more information
  • LAUSD is advocation for federal, state, and local funding to support this effort
  • The school board is considering a bond initiative to support updating school facilities
  • Both Coronavirus cases and testing are leading indicators of when LAUSD can consider bringing students back to schools
  • One goal for 2020-21 school year is to have as much teacher-led interaction as possible
  • Online instruction will have more structure and standards and increased interaction this year
  • Many measures have been put in place to clean and sanitize schools daily/nightly
  • The first few days of school will focus on continuing to train teachers, ensuring students are connected, and giving students a chance to meet their teachers and receive appropriate materials
  • Childcare will be provided for those working at school sites
  • Another goal is to maximize the time in school for students. One-on-one tutoring will be provided for those who need it most
