Many Palms students have won local, regional, and state-wide recognition in previous Reflections contests, but we can't participate unless a parent comes forward to help run the contest.

Palms principal, Dr. Moriuchi, proudly holds our latest academic award issued by the agency that assesses secondary educational institutions. Palms is fully accredited for Grades 6-7-8 by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Last spring, Palms underwent a rigorous assessment of academic programs and overall education, ultimately earning WASC approval. While we’ve always been proud of the solid education Palms students receive, this marks a notable achievement, particularly as this is a new standard being applied to middle school programs. Congratulations to our Palms students, teachers and staff!

    Hello Palms Middle Community,

Since I received my district displacement notice, I have had many people ask me, "What is happening with you?'  One even said, "I hope you enjoy your retirement."

I am not retiring but I am able to let the Palms Community know 'What is happening."  The district has assigned me to Westchester High School's Sport Medicine Magnet School as a pool sub.  That means they can use me as they need and other schools that need a sub can too.

I will be staying in contact with many of the Palms Community.  Have a healthy and productive 2018-19.

Have you seen the new mural on the PE side near Palms Boulevard? It's gorgeous and motivational with a theme of, "Reach for the Stars." Ms. Goldin's art students designed and painted the mural earlier this month along with officers of the Los Angeles Police Department, Pacific Division, and artists Zander and Terrence Stasse. Their effort was part of the Los Angeles Community Street Art Initiative, which builds friendships between Los Angeles children and police officers through the creation of public art. Enjoy this time-lapse video of the students hard at work.

The Bruin Experiment 2018 group shot

Palms students' well-researched, clearly articulated science projects dazzled UCLA faculty on Sunday, April 8, at The Bruin Experiment Science Fair. Palms won for the third year in a row, beating out strong competitors Webster Middle School and Mark Twain Middle School. One winner was named from each school, several Honorable Mention medals were awarded, and Palms was named the overall winner. Madeline Doi was the Palms winner, and Adnan Shavers, Danika Pienkos, and Brendan Messinger won Honorable Mentions.

The Bruin Experiment provides students an opportunity to investigate a scientific question of their choosing. Students design and execute an experiment, employing all parts of the scientific method, and then synthesize their results in a display. Each student is expected to give multiple oral presentations to the judges, made up of UCLA faculty from different scientific disciplines. It's a terrific experience for all student participants. Palms is very proud of all students who participated in The Bruin Experiment 2018!

Day 7 photo 5

Approximately eighty 8th grade Palms students experienced history while visiting Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC over Spring Break on the Founding Fathers Tour. With packed travel days, they saw many amazing historic sites! To name just a few, they visited Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, and Fenway Park; the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and the 9/11 Memorial; Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Rocky Steps; and Mount Vernon, the Jefferson Memorial, and Capitol Hill. And though it has been a very cold winter, everyone managed to stay warm and enjoy traveling as a group! We'll post details of their trip in the 2018 Trip Journal.

Today, renowned Asian American theater group East West Players performed their play, "Tam Tran Goes to Washington," at Palms during Periods 4 and 5.

The play is a triumphant, yet tragic, story of Vietnamese-American, Tam Tran, a UCLA graduate, who spoke in front of Congress about the Dream Act and was killed tragically by a drunk driver while vacationing in Maine. This show honors her legacy.

A UCLA film crew and Tam's UCLA professor planned to attend the play.

A theater review by noted theater critic William S. Peare:

On December 14, 2017, the Readers Theater students of Mr. Kim put on a fantastic performance, first for students and then for family members.

"The Beatles Show" celebrated the music of the greatest-ever rock and roll band, with skits set to the music of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, singing and instrumental performances, and audience participation.

Among the highlights:

  • Girls screamed as Beatles played by Gibson, Ryan, Wesley, and Adam were carried across the stage.
  • Nolan told us facts about the Fab Four.
  • To the tune of "Help!" and "When I'm 64," senior citizens complained about young whippersnappers and their "wiffy" (wi-fi) while their caretakers complained about the senior citizens.
  • Counselor Mr. Acevedo won the swing dance contest.
  • Ukulele-playing Dominic accompanied Danae as she sang "Let it Be."
  • Nolan played "Eleanor Rigby" beautifully on violin.
  • Daniel shook things up with "Day in the Life" on electric guitar.
  • A shark teacher who looked suspiciously like Ms. Clark warned students in the school of fish not to go in the Octopus's Garden, but they didn't listen.

After the audience batted around giant beach balls, Aaron and the other students gave us a final message: All You Need is Love.

Congratulations to Mr. Kim and his students for the excellent performance!

Students in Mr. Kim's 6th grade class raised $568 for Hurricane Harvey Relief during Labor Day Weekend.

Their extra credit assignment was to create a poster and take a photo with a donor. It was a Civics lesson - looking out for others is a duty as a citizen. Congratulations students on being such great citizens!

If you play a jazz band instrument and can read music, you may be interested in auditioning for Jazz Band. This group of 25 advanced players rehearses once a week from 3:15-4 pm, usually on Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Auditions will take place during the lunch period this week on:

  • Wednesday, September 6
  • Thursday, September 7
  • Friday, September 8

If you'd like to audition, please see Ms. Jones in Room 172 to get the audition music. Practice it, and then come back at lunch time this Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday to sign up for an audition.
Jazz Band instruments are: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, bass, electric guitar, piano, and drum set.
Guitar players: we have amps for guitars, but you'll need to bring your own guitar for the audition. You can leave it in Ms. Jones's office on the morning of your audition.
See Ms. Jones in Room 172 if you have questions.

For the first time since 1918, a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States. In Los Angeles, we will experience a partial eclipse from approximately 9:00 am until noon. While it is a rare educational opportunity, please talk to your children and the entire family about the risks of looking directly at the sun. Some teachers and classrooms at Palms are planning safe viewing experiences for their students.

The students in Mr. Scott's class have prepared pin-hole cameras so they'll have a safe way to view this celestial event from the quad between 9:05 am and 11:45 am, the period when the moon will be blocking part of the sun. Peak darkness will occur at 10:20 am.
