In 2015, Lowe's Home Improvement Centers gave Palms a $5,000 grant for school beautification efforts.

Thank you, Lowe's!

Beautification Day

On Beautification Day volunteers work on campus beautification and cleanup projects. Parents, children who can help, friends, and community members are welcome. Beautification Days are often planned just before Visitors Days.

Volunteers are given assignments and are provided with tools and materials, as well as water and snacks. Materials may be donated by local businesses.

Ideas for Beautification Days

Next time we may:

  • Build a greenhouse.
  • Dig trenches for irrigation.
  • Plant a fruit grove.
  • Give a garden home to chickens.

Come to the next Friends of Palms meeting and give us your ideas!

We worked on the Sixth Grade Garden and the Sky Tunnel.

Saturday January 24, 2015

We finished Phase 2 of the Sky Tunnel, did general gardening, weeding, and trash pickup around campus, and cleaned up the Learning Garden.

Saturday September 27, 2014

We had multiple projects going on simultaneous. We cleaned up the Library Patio and other areas around the school and a special crew painted the tunnel so it almost appears to be outdoors! Thank you to Beautification Chair Kelley Reynolds, to Ray Wright who spearheaded the "Sky Tunnel" project, and to everyone else who came to help out.

Saturday April 5, 2014

Garden Day was a great day at Palms, with volunteers and the Motor Avenue Improvement Association building our sixth grade learning garden. About 75 people attended, including parents, kids, and school staff members. We shared a wonderful community feeling with beautiful results. In a few short hours we transformed a weed-infested, overgrown, blighted area into a clean, plantable, beautiful space. It was a lot of work but by the mid-afternoon the kids were planting the starter plants in completely rejuvenated planter beds.

Saturday October 5, 2013

About 200 students, parents, and community members showed up to landscape and power wash. They also cleaned the classrooms of 22 teachers. Thank you to Esther Margulies, event organizer, and to everyone who helped!

Saturday October 13, 2012

We picked up trash, installed mulch, turned soil, trimmed plants, power-washed, sanded, and painted. Thank you to Kelley Reynolds, event organizer.

Saturday September 10, 2011

Pepperdine Students were on campus cleaning as part of their "Step Forward Day" project. Palms families brought rakes, brooms, and dustpans. Thanks everyone for doing a good deed for the community!

Saturday November 5, 2011

We tidied up our campus to get it into tip-top shape. Volunteers brought work gloves, rakes and wheelbarrows and a bag of mulch if they could. We provided garbage bags and plastic gloves for trash collection, plus bottled water and gratitude! High school students earned service credit and were invited to help. Thank you to Elizabeth Fenner, event organizer.

Thursday April 12, 2012, 3:00-4:00pm

We tidied up the campus in preparation for the school year's last Visitors Day on Friday April 13. We worked quickly so we needed only an hour of our volunteers' time. Thank you for helping your school look its best and thank you to Elizabeth Fenner, event organizer.

Fall 2012:

Middle schoolers showed the pride they have in their clean school. High schoolers got community service hoursĀŠ. We prepared the Library Garden tables for painting, added mulch under the trees in the 6th grade area, and did general cleanup of the main covered walkway, tunnel, Library, and Auditorium. All necessary tools and supplies were supplied, but participants brought their own work gloves. Friends of Palms provided water but everyone was welcome to bring snacks.
